Just For Fun
1980's Hardcore Mix Tapes

Just because they were next in the box o' tapes, the first two of three comps I made at the end of the 80's.
All tracks from vinyl, nothing too obscure - my intent was to pick tracks that were "hits" or made an impression on me. Only a couple things I would edit out, but I left everything as-is. 99% from 1980 to 1982, mostly Midwest & West Coast stuff.
Each file is a side long track, so if you want to skip a track assume it's 1:30.

Du Pont
4 song tape, 1991

If memory serves these guys hailed from Toledo. Vocal-less line-up of guitar/bass/drums/sampler.
I know Greg Gasiorowski is on sampler, possibly everything else.
Mix is mud, so I gave it a little eq.

SUBURBAN BLIGHT
practice tape circa 1983

One more band I was in. Details are really sketchy on this - I was only in the band for a short time, and my memory has some gaps. They were based in the suburbs of Detroit, and the 2 guitarists had their own take on hardcore - very discordant and chaotic, with odd arrangements. Today we might call this "outsider" or "no wave."
I only played one gig, opening for Crucifix.
Enlisted the drummer for my next band.
10 tracks of treble-y blasts (1st 2 run-on) with pretty low vocals.
First name basis since I have not contacted the guitarists.

Matt - drums
Jon  - bass
Andy - guitar
Mike - guitar/vocals

BORN WITHOUT A FACE
psych!

1984 tape release from Grand Rapids.
Primal stuff here, with elements of Midwest hardcore, Rudimentary Peni, and some kind of twisted literary genius.
"Sweating Like Nixon...Shaking Like Widmark"
"We are the meek who will inherit the bland/It doesn't mean much when your heroes are canned"

There is a waaaay over the top box set for sale here

This is not on it.

Affiliated

live at the City Club, Detroit January 28 1983

Short-lived band with Joe (drummer from Gerbils), Ron (bassist of Gerbils, later of Necros, now of NA), Dave Rice (guitarist of L-Seven, recorder of great local bands) and a vocalist I didn't know.
Soundboard recording from a gig where they did 2 sets.

STRANGE FRUIT
abiku 7"

Out of Kalamazoo some art-damaged creepy crawl.
Steve Miller from the Fix, Steve Shelly of Crucifucks/Sonic Youth, Tim Foljohn of Two Dollar Guitar. Vocalist Sherrie kept it natural. Recorded by Dave Rice & there is more of him to come!

PUBLIC NOISE
demo May 16, 1987

I joined Public Noise around 1986. They were based in Brighton, Michigan, and were already playing manic, chaotic gigs. We added Joe on 2nd guitar, then lost original member Andy. I have some practice tapes with him I will post at a later date. There was never an official release.
Kurt now sings for Knife, Andy fronts Minus 9.

basement in East Lansing 4-track recorded by Mike Wisti
Curt Masoff - vocals
Joe Kelley - guitar
Jon Howard - bass
Craig McNabb - drums

Also for your eyeballs
My Tumblr of pics and flyers

FARMING RELATED INJURIES

90 minute compilation of Michigan industrial. This came out of the Slaughterhouse camp,
a clique of people following the lead of Butthole Surfers, TG, and German Shepherds.
A few clunkers in there, as you may expect over 90 minutes. Abiku Red & Arc Of Bon had a split LP, and Akibu went on to be Strange Fruit (post of their ep coming up).
Trevor Malcolm played bass in the Butthole Surfers.
I grouped the tracks by artist on each side, so whenever a group has 2 tracks they are grouped together. The tape at least tried to flow together without gaps anyway.

CIRCLE CONFUSION
1985 demo

Ann Arbor drum machine deathrockers.
Well kinda, not very goth, more like Red Lorry Yellow Lorry.
They also did a full LP on a Euro label, then split when they couldn't get a US release.
I think I saw them open for Throwing Muses & once at the Halfway Inn, but I can't remember a dang thing. It has aged pretty well, esp the 2nd track, Arctic Days.

Radical Left
"No Right Turn"

Midwest hardcore from the early 80's, lost in the shuffle of the regulars at the Freezer Theater (Necros, NA, Meatmen, etc.)
Live they were a bit awkward, but it only added to the charm. Like the Nihilistics, they were raw and committed, but a little "off." Wouldn't change a thing. This is their only release.
A bit of mangled tape on the first track, my copy always sounded like that.
